TOO MUCH SCROLLING. Too much food. Too much self-limiting thoughts and behaviors. It’s all dimming my light, my focus. And quite frankly, I’m over it.

Overconsumption is a spirit. It is one of the most common and successful ways to shape one’s belief system into thinking that more is better. “If I don’t have ___ I’m not fulfilled” or, “If I don’t learn all there is to know about ___, I can’t take the leap”. The list goes on. This spirit is distracting, with the intention of taking you away from fulfilling your purpose and honoring your calling. This spirit does everything it can to make you feel like you alone are not good enough. It pulls you away from yourself to see the things outside of you as more important or significant than what’s within.

More than that, it makes us feel inadequate just as we were designed for this human experience. It instills a sense of lack. And this is what keeps us consuming more, scrolling more, and feeling like we don’t have everything we thought we needed because what I have doesn’t look a certain way or give me the feelings it gave this person in the commercial or the advertisement. I have to have that “thing” in order to feel secure and safe.

Well, I’m here to tell you that this isn’t how we are naturally as humans, but it is a response to how we’ve been groomedthrough the media for decades. This concept is in everything around us. It’s on the billboards, on your feed, fast food restaurants, at the stores, even in church (yep). So don’t beat yourself up about how you’ve been intentionally conditioned. Nor should you beat yourself up because of how difficult it is to break through that noise and come back home to yourself.

I would be willing to bet that a great majority of people are affected by this type of programming in some way, so we’re definitely not alone in this. But our saving grace lies within that same innate adaptability that’s been strategically used against us. Just as we were conditioned to take on a lack mindset, we have the same ability to rest in our inner knowing.

It starts with you breaking apart the foundations of your belief system that support this endless cycle of a lack mindset. Therapy is a great place to start, as well as shadow work. Be intentional about not picking up your phone when you first wake up in the morning and slow it down. You didn’t miss out on anything that can’t wait until you get yourself together first. You have everything you need right here, right now. Affirm this from the very beginning every single day and don’t just say it…believe it. Walk in it. OWN IT. This is now your new truth.

One of the best things I have started doing to eradicate this is SLOWING DOWN. After years of college and the military, it’s taking some intentional time to recondition my mind towards divine femininity. “If I’m not being productive, moving, go-go-go, then I’m not valuable.” Those of us who are the descendants of the enslaved especially feel this in our DNA. We’ve been conditioned to believe taking care of others before myself is the honorable thing to do (another attempt at being too focused on what’s around us instead of what’s within). You get the point. So get up earlier if you must to make room for intentional self-awareness, meditation, showing gratitude to the Ancestors, etc. Watch how that dedicated time shifts your entire day. You’ll begin to crave this moment of solitude to feel balanced, grounded, and whole.

If you’re reading this in August-September, you probably feel the pull to really lock in and release habits and beliefs that no longer serve you. As we journey through eclipse season, it is a prime time to do just that. Break the cycle by embracing the stillness. Meditating more. After all, what goes on outside of us is a reflection of what’s happening internally. Everything is connected, everything is spiritual. It’s time for us to come home to ourselves. When you make home a safe space for your soul and spirit to rest, everything else takes care of itself.
