POWERFUL. The best word that I can think of to describe the properties of this highly underrated stone. African Bloodstone (also called setonite) is a powerful spiritual and physical healer I hope you consider adding to your collection after reading this post. Here’s a little background on it:
African bloodstone contains deep hues of green and grays, along with traces of that signature blood-red. It contains inclusions chalcedony, quartz, jasper, iron oxide, hematite, and several other trace minerals that give this stone its unique look and healing properties.
Found in Ancient Kemet, this stone has had a rocky (all puns intended) history there as well as throughout ancient Greece and Rome. Present day, you can still find it across various regions of Africa including South Africa, Madagascar, and Namibia. It was often used as a talisman to protect against physical ailments, negative spirits, while promoting courage and personal power.
Physical Healing Properties:
African Bloodstone is an ideal crystal for rejuvenating and revitalizing your energy levels. If you’re on the road to recovering from a physical illness, this iron-rich stone is a great companion. It is great for boosting the immune system, pain relief, increasing blood flow, as well as your overall physical health. If you’ve been feeling a bit down/depressed, consider carrying this crystal with you in your pocket and close to your root chakra to encourage grounding and energy flow as well as promoting peace and emotional well-being.

This is one of my favorite crystals to work with when balancing out a sluggish root chakra. I can feel the difference in my overall spiritual energy when it’s in my presence. Any time I feel myself worrying, fearful, or consumed by the woes of the world, this stone is my go-to to ground out my energy and calm down. African bloodstone is great at removing negative energy while promoting your personal power and courage to overcome life’s challenges. If you’ve been feeling defeated or powerless, this is the stone to use to help call your power back to you so you can remember who you are!
I also like working with this stone when working with Great Mother Sekhmet. Sekhmet governs matters of the blood as well as overall healing and vitality. If you feel called, meditate with her and give her a piece as an offering to show gratitude for her healing Sekhem energy.
How do I work with it?
- Consider placing African bloodstone in crystal grids to allow its properties to bloom within your living spaces.
- When meditating, place this stone (cleansed, charged, & programmed) on your root chakra to open up any sluggish energy at the root and increase personal power.
- Wear it in the form of bracelets/necklaces to have on you at your job or any dealings with the public to protect your energy and promote peace.
- Cleanse regularly with incense smoke, salt, and/or under the full moon. You can also place it on a piece of selenite to cleanse and charge overnight as well.
