“Everything must go. Like everything you own…like everything you think you know…forget about it.” – Jhene Aiko

Cover art for Everything Must Go by Jhené Aiko

I heard this song for the first time yesterday. What she says is nothing new, but the way it hit my Spirit resonated much differently.

That lyric, “everything you own”. As Jhene sung this lyric, it was like time stood still and I had one of those Raven Baxter moments where I went tunnel vision into a download I didn’t see coming. I felt Spirit taking me deeper than understanding what I ‘own’ as being purely materialistic. My clothes, my computer, my singing bowls. No. Deeper.

“Go deeper with this.” Spirit says to me. So I sit…and it hits me.

Everything you OWN…forget about it. Every belief system you’ve adopted as your own. Every behavior, every saying, your way of being and existing in this world. When Jhene says EVERYTHING, it also expands to the beliefs we settle with.

What are you owning and settling in, in this season, out of habit?

What are you holding on to so tightly that prohibits you and it from breathing and being deeply?

Even writing this, I feel resistance with fully stepping into this myself. So I’m writing not above nor below you, but right beside…in sync with you.

I feel this deeply for Black women, specifically. We have this need to hold on to things because nothing was ever really ours. Historically, we have always been everything for everyone else, and hardly anything to ourselves except our memories and love. Our families weren’t our own, our children weren’t our own, our bodies weren’t our own. Forever in servitude to everyone else’s needs while neglecting our own.

So, the effects of that type of trauma has filtered down to us. Afraid to let things go because it felt safe to hold something. Own something. And when it’s taken from us, it feels personal. We don’t trust that what’s taken from us can make space for something greater.

Well, it all boils down to one thing.

TRUST.

This is where we call our power back and reclaim what is rightfully ours. We heal the lineage from these behaviors when we trust that what we lose makes room for better and greater.

When we hold on to things so tightly, we suffocate ‘it’ and us. It is a form of control. And it’s not only things that don’t mean us well. It’s also things that were meant to nourish us for a season that we refuse to let go and has now turned into our crutch. Our enabler.

For me, one of those things was religion. That religion served me in my younger years, and some of those principles influence my spiritual practices present day. However, my Spirit required expansion. Once I gave my permission to trust and lean not on my own ‘understanding’, the fruits followed.

If you’ve been doing a thing, being a certain way, believing in a certain thing, but you still feel restless, your Spirit no longer fits in the container you’ve held it in. It is time for expansion, and in order to fully step into it…everything must go.

Three signs plastered to a grey tiled wall announce a store liquidation sale, with the middle one saying that "Everything must go!"

Do you trust your path? That you don’t walk alone, and you’ll always have everything you need when you need it? Can you receive that if you have the questions, the answer is already available to you…you just have to rest and align with it?

Everything must go. In this moment I pray you rest in knowing that it is ok for something to no longer serve you that once did. You are allowed to change your mind. You are allowed to resonate with a way of being now that wasn’t even a consideration at an earlier phase of your life. In fact, if you’re feeling a desire to shift, it’s all in alignment for who you’re becoming.

I know. Easier said than done (but it doesn’t have to be). In order to attain the bigger picture, we must settle in the details and trust that our desires all lead us to exploring and becoming our best selves.

At the time this is released, the year of the snake is making it’s final sweep of shedding and removing what no longer serves us. This message is divinely aligned, for sure. But, whenever and however it finds you, it remains true.

All that exists is the here and now. Honor your pace. Honor your journey. There is no rush and time is not running out. You’re right where you’re meant to be. So it is.
