You: I feel like my roads are blocked. Ancestors, is this the case?

Ancestors: Yes.

You: Ok, let’s prep this ritual to open them up.

*Grabs herbs, candles, petition paper, and a pencil*

The Ancestors: No.

You:

The Ancestors focus your attention to the altar. The water is murky. Flowers are decaying. Cigar ash decorates the altar cloth. Liquor glass dried up. Coffee from a week ago sits.

The Ancestors:

Wrap it up.

The last thing the Ancestors need in this scenario is to be asked for something when their space has been abandoned. More importantly, you’ve abandoned yourself. If the altar looks that way, your energy probably does also: murky, stale, and stagnant.

No heat nor judgment, here. Life happens to everyone. Adverse mental health experiences like depression and anxiety may also be at play. Maybe you’ve been working nonstop for several days and had no time to tend to an altar, let alone yourself. (Hope that covers all nuance, here).

When you first sat at the altar to divine about your roads, that was your own energy letting you know that something is out of order. You didn’t just wake up one day like an accident. The inquiry alone was Divine intervention.

Next, you went to the Ancestors for guidance and they made you look around. I mean, really take inventory of your surroundings so you see the state of your altar as a reflection of what’s happening internally. You’ve been so wrapped up in yourself that you haven’t taken the time to really see what’s going on within.

Of course they put an ‘all stop’ to you calling in more on top of the chaos that’s already present. Think about the times you’ve seen an accident on the road. If the police aren’t there to control the flow of traffic, (and you know how nosy and distracted we get in those moments), it’s an open invitation to worsen the condition.

Yes, the Ancestors don’t like a dirty altar. But more importantly, they care about what that altar is reflecting back within our own energy. They know the altar wouldn’t get that disorderly under normal circumstances because of what that altar means to you. The altar is an extension of your own energy. It becomes less about the things you adorn it with and more about what that space represents as far as your relationship with who that altar serves, and yourself.

And what do you know, you never needed those herbs, candles, and whatever else. The ritual the Ancestors directed you to perform was presence. Society has a way of reducing humanity to how much it can produce, perform, and consume. Your Spirits are not having it.

If this sounds like you in this moment, take a minute to inventory your spiritual, mental, and physical hygiene. When’s the last time you took a spiritual bath? Refreshed your altar? Opened your windows? Went for a walk outside? You may end up finding out it’s all the road opening you need in this moment.

Start there. Then, if the Ancestors find it necessary for additional ritual, trust they’ll let you know.

Be kind to yourself by taking care of yourself. The Ancestors desire that from us before anything else. Hope this helps.

With love,
